In 2005, the Lake Worth CDC initiated a very successful model block strategy on Latona Avenue in the Osborne community.  The street was notorious for crime, overcrowded housing and many properties had been left for neglect by the owner and had been embroiled in legal issues for the past 20 or more years.  Through the persistence and instrumentality of the Lake Worth CDC, nineteen lots have been acquired on which seventeen houses are to be constructed. Six new homes have been completed, providing affordable housing for families with low to moderate income. Another three homes are currently under construction. The Lake Worth CDC also worked with the City of Lake Worth to secure a federal Community Development Block Grant to make further improvements to enhance the “model block.”  The addition of new street lighting, sidewalks and landscaping will transform the entire neighborhood into one of greater stability for the homeowner-occupants and other residents living in the community.

LATONA MODEL BLOCKText Box: Text Box: Since 1998 the Lake Worth CDC has worked to upgrade the quality of the existing housing stock while preserving the traditional characteristics of the neighborhood. An atmosphere that encourages private sector homebuilders and individuals to invest in the community is transforming this once blighted area into an attractive and safe neighborhood. The Lake Worth CDC completed construction of twelve new homes in this area. All of these homeowners were the recipients of first time homeowner subsidies provided by Palm Beach County’s Department of Housing and Community Development. These subsidies were available only to low and moderate income families and individuals and they averaged $20,000. The home prices ranged from $89,900.00 to $134,000.00. Through the South E Street Initiative the tax base was increased by over $1 million. Beautification and overall neighborhood improvement were achieved through home ownership.
