In 2005, the Lake Worth CDC initiated a very successful model block strategy on Latona Avenue in the Osborne community. The street was notorious for crime, overcrowded housing and many properties had been left for neglect by the owner and had been embroiled in legal issues for the past 20 or more years. Through the persistence and instrumentality of the Lake Worth CDC, nineteen lots have been acquired on which seventeen houses are to be constructed. Six new homes have been completed, providing affordable housing for families with low to moderate income. Another three homes are currently under construction. The Lake Worth CDC also worked with the City of Lake Worth to secure a federal Community Development Block Grant to make further improvements to enhance the “model block.” The addition of new street lighting, sidewalks and landscaping will transform the entire neighborhood into one of greater stability for the homeowner-occupants and other residents living in the community. |
